Amritsar News:

In a swift and decisive operation, Punjab Police averted what could have been a major terror incident after seizing two live hand grenades in Amritsar. The arrest of a suspect from the Tarn Taran district has exposed disturbing indications of cross-border arms smuggling, believed to be orchestrated by handlers linked to Pakistan’s ISI network.

According to police officials, the operation was carried out late Sunday night following a specific intelligence tip. Acting swiftly, a team from Amritsar Rural Police intercepted the accused, leading to the recovery of the grenades from his possession. The seized explosives were found to be of military-grade quality, raising suspicions of potential plans to carry out an attack in the region.

Authorities have identified the arrested man as a local resident of Tarn Taran with alleged connections to operatives across the border. Preliminary investigations indicate that the grenades may have been dropped via drone delivery, a method increasingly used by terror networks to push weapons and narcotics into Indian territory.

Senior police officials stated that the arrest marks another attempt to destabilize peace in Punjab. “This recovery highlights how anti-national elements continue to misuse border routes for smuggling arms and ammunition. Our intelligence units are working round the clock to dismantle these networks,” a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity.

The investigation has since widened, with joint teams from state intelligence, the Anti-Terror Squad, and central agencies now verifying possible links to previously detected drone drops along the Indo-Pak border. Forensic experts have also been roped in to examine the grenades and determine their exact origin.

This seizure comes at a time when Punjab Police have intensified border surveillance amid rising reports of drone incursions and illegal arms drops from across Pakistan. In recent months, security forces have intercepted multiple consignments of explosives and narcotics — part of what officials call a “silent infiltration strategy” designed to fuel unrest.

Residents in the nearby areas have expressed relief after the prompt police action, commending the authorities for their vigilance. “We live close to the border and every time such news breaks, there’s fear in our hearts. The police acted fast, and that gives us confidence,” said Gurmeet Singh, a local shopkeeper near the Amritsar–Tarn Taran route.

Meanwhile, sources within the police department confirmed that the suspect is being interrogated to uncover the broader network involved in smuggling and the intended targets of the seized grenades. More arrests are expected in the coming days. Punjab has long remained a sensitive region due to its proximity to Pakistan, and the latest seizure underscores the persistent cross-border threats faced by Indian security agencies. The state government has reportedly directed enhanced patrolling and drone surveillance in vulnerable zones to ensure such attempts are thwarted before they escalate.
