A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Thursday after an Indian Army vehicle skidded off a narrow mountain road and plunged deep into a gorge, killing ten Army personnel and leaving 11 others injured. The accident has once again highlighted the extreme risks faced by troops while operating in the harsh and unpredictable terrain of the Union Territory.

According to official information, the armoured vehicle was moving through the Bhaderwah region of Doda when it lost control on a difficult stretch and fell into a gorge estimated to be around 200 feet deep. The incident reportedly occurred near Khanni Top, a high-altitude area that remains challenging for movement due to steep slopes, sharp turns, and unstable roads, especially during adverse weather.

Initial reports indicated that the vehicle was carrying troops deployed for an operational requirement. The Army stated that the accident happened as the vehicle was navigating treacherous terrain in bad weather conditions, which may have reduced visibility and made the road surface slippery. In such areas, even a minor skid can turn deadly because the roads are narrow and bordered by deep valleys.

The crash triggered an immediate emergency response. A joint rescue operation involving Army teams and local authorities was launched on priority. Personnel rushed to the accident site and began recovery efforts in difficult conditions, reaching the gorge to evacuate injured soldiers and retrieve those trapped inside the vehicle. Rescue efforts in such terrain are often complicated by steep drops, unstable ground, and limited access for heavy equipment.

The injured soldiers were quickly moved for medical treatment. Some of the wounded were reportedly airlifted to ensure faster hospital access, while others were transported through available routes under heavy security and medical supervision. Officials have said that every effort is being made to provide the best possible care to the injured personnel.

Following the incident, condolence messages poured in from senior leadership. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the loss of lives and said the sacrifice and service of the soldiers would never be forgotten. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the families of the deceased while praying for the recovery of the injured.

This tragic accident has sent shockwaves across the region and among citizens nationwide, as the country mourns the loss of brave soldiers who were on duty in one of India’s most demanding operational environments. The Army has not only to face security threats in such areas, but also the constant danger posed by harsh weather, unpredictable mountain roads, and rugged terrain.

Authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including road conditions, weather impact, and safety protocols. Meanwhile, the focus remains on supporting the injured, assisting affected families, and ensuring the smooth movement of essential forces in the region. The nation stands united in remembering the soldiers who lost their lives in the accident, honouring their service, and extending strength to the families grieving this irreparable loss.
