Political Campaign Turns Deadly in Bihar

A political clash in Mokama, Bihar, has turned into a murder case that has rocked the state’s election landscape. Dularchand Yadav, a supporter of the Jan Suraaj Party, was allegedly killed during a violent altercation involving workers from rival political groups.

The incident occurred during an ongoing campaign, exposing once again the explosive mix of politics and violence that often grips Bihar during elections.

The Fatal Clash

According to reports, the violence erupted during a heated confrontation between supporters of rival parties. Dularchand Yadav, who was actively campaigning for the Jan Suraaj Party, was severely assaulted. He was later declared dead at a nearby hospital.

The post-mortem revealed fatal internal injuries to his lungs and chest caused by heavy impact. The nature of the attack suggested that Yadav was targeted amid growing political hostility in the region.

Following the killing, police filed a First Information Report (FIR) naming former MLA and current JD(U) candidate Anant Singh, along with four of his associates, as accused in the murder case.

High-Profile Arrest Sends Shockwaves

Late Sunday night, Bihar Police arrested Anant Singh, popularly known as the “Bahubali” of Mokama, a term often used in Bihar politics to describe powerful strongmen with influence across criminal and political circles.

Two of Singh’s close aides, identified as Manikant Thakur and Ranjeet Ram, were also detained. The arrest took place at Singh’s residence in Barh, under heavy police security.

The move sparked massive reactions in Bihar’s political circles, with Singh’s supporters calling it a “political conspiracy,” while rival parties hailed it as a “victory for justice.”

A History of Power and Violence

Anant Singh, a controversial figure in Bihar politics, has long been accused of using intimidation and muscle power to maintain his influence. Known for his flamboyant personality and fiery image, he has faced multiple criminal cases in the past.

His arrest once again raises questions about the deep-rooted criminalization of politics in the state. Despite repeated court interventions and election reforms, Bihar continues to witness candidates with serious charges contesting polls and maintaining strong voter bases.

Police Investigation Underway

Officials confirmed that forensic teams have begun reconstructing the scene of the crime, and statements from eyewitnesses are being recorded.
Authorities are also examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and mobile phone records to piece together the chain of events leading to Yadav’s death.

Police officials stated that they will “not bow to political pressure” and assured that all those responsible will face legal action, regardless of their social or political standing.

Public Outrage and Political Fallout

The murder has triggered widespread outrage across Bihar. Civil rights groups and opposition leaders have demanded stricter screening of candidates with criminal records before allowing them to contest elections.

Local residents described the atmosphere in Mokama as tense but under control following the heavy deployment of security forces. Meanwhile, Jan Suraaj Party supporters held a candlelight vigil for Dularchand Yadav, calling him “a victim of political arrogance.”

A Familiar Pattern in Bihar’s Power Politics

The killing underscores a grim reality  that in several parts of Bihar, election campaigns are often marred by bloodshed, fear, and revenge.
Despite promises of reform, political violence continues to threaten the democratic spirit of the state.

For Bihar’s people, this tragedy is not just about one man’s death, it’s about how deeply politics and crime have intertwined, turning campaigns into battlegrounds rather than celebrations of democracy.

Parting Thoughts-

The arrest of Anant Singh has once again brought Bihar’s old wounds of lawlessness to the surface. While police assure justice, the real challenge lies ahead  in breaking the cycle of power, fear, and impunity that has defined much of Bihar’s political history.

As the investigation unfolds, the case could become a test of whether the state’s justice system can finally prove that no one, not even the powerful, is above the law.
