Mythological thriller Jatadhara, featuring Sonakshi Sinha and Sudheer Babu, hit theatres on 7 November 2025, but its debut has been far from electrifying. The much-touted film, which blends ancient mythology with psychological mystery, recorded an opening-day collection of just ₹90 lakh net across all languages, a modest start for a film marketed as a pan-India release.
Directed by Venkat Kalyan and Abhishek Jaiswal, Jatadhara aimed to lure audiences with its mystic undertone, visual grandeur, and the unique presence of Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha stepping into the Telugu industry for the first time. However, the response from both Telugu and Hindi belts has been underwhelming. Early box office trends reveal that the Telugu version managed around 17% occupancy, while the Hindi shows struggled at around 6% numbers that have left trade analysts concerned.
Industry experts suggest several reasons behind the film’s slow start. The genre itself, a blend of mythology and supernatural suspense appeals to a niche audience, while the competition from other Diwali-week releases has split viewer attention. Moreover, marketing efforts reportedly fell short in reaching audiences beyond the South Indian states, limiting the movie’s pan-India pull.
Despite the sluggish beginning, insiders believe Jatadhara could still redeem itself if strong word-of-mouth and positive weekend collections come into play. The film’s visuals and Sonakshi’s performance have received praise from early viewers, hinting that the story’s unique tone might help it gain traction in the days ahead.
For now, the movie’s future rests on its weekend performance, the critical phase that determines whether a film sustains or fades after the opening wave. If Jatadhara manages to cross the ₹2-crore mark by the end of its first weekend, it may still secure a respectable run.
However, if the collections continue to remain below the crore-mark territory, the thriller may join the growing list of mythic experiments that failed to convert hype into hard numbers. As of now, Jatadhara’s box office story reads like its theme is mysterious, uncertain, and waiting for a twist.
