A shocking crime has shaken Navi Mumbai after a 70-year-old Non-Resident Indian (NRI) from London was arrested for the sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in the city’s Taloja area. In a horrifying twist, the police revealed that the child’s mother was also involved, allegedly helping the accused in exchange for money and gifts.

According to investigators, the elderly man, a frequent visitor to India, had developed a relationship with the victim’s mother over the past two years. During his visits, he allegedly exploited the child multiple times while her mother turned a blind eye  and even enabled the abuse for financial benefit.

The disturbing truth came to light when a neighbour grew suspicious of the man’s frequent visits and the girl’s withdrawn behaviour. Following a complaint, the police raided the accused’s Taloja residence and reportedly found sex toys, objectionable items, and video recordings of the abuse. All materials have been seized and sent for forensic testing.

Police officials confirmed that both the NRI and the girl’s mother have been arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) dealing with sexual assault and criminal conspiracy. The pair has been remanded to police custody while further investigations continue.

A senior police officer described the case as one of the “most disturbing and heart-wrenching” incidents in recent years. “The betrayal by the mother makes this crime particularly cruel,” the officer said. “The child has been rescued and placed under the care of the Child Welfare Committee. Counselling and medical treatment have already begun.”

The accused, who has business interests in London and Mumbai, is being questioned to determine whether he had targeted other minors. Authorities are also investigating the money trail between him and the child’s mother to understand the extent of their arrangement.

Local residents in Taloja have expressed outrage and disbelief. Many gathered outside the police station, demanding the harshest possible punishment for both the accused and the mother. “No parent should ever betray their child like this,” one neighbour said. “This is beyond forgiveness.”

The incident has reignited calls for stronger public awareness about child safety, online exploitation, and grooming behaviour. Experts say such crimes often go unnoticed because the abuser manipulates trust within families. They also warn that poverty and financial dependency can sometimes lead vulnerable parents to make devastating choices.

The Women and Child Welfare Department has urged citizens to stay alert and report suspicious behaviour or possible abuse through child helpline number 1098. “A single call can save a life,” an official said. As the case unfolds, it serves as a grim reminder that child sexual abuse can happen anywhere  even within homes  and often at the hands of those meant to protect. The Navi Mumbai Police have vowed to ensure justice for the survivor and deliver the strongest possible punishment to those responsible.
