If you’ve been enjoying the AI-powered video generator Sora by OpenAI and hit its free usage cap, there’s now a new option: you can buy extra video-generation credits. The move marks a clear shift from “free‐trial” into monetisation.

Under the current system, free users are locked to about 30 videos per day, while Pro users get up to 100 free generations daily. If you reach your limit and want more, you can now pay for them. Ten additional generations cost around $4 and credits are valid for 12 months. Each video uses a variable number of credits depending on its length, resolution and complexity.

OpenAI says the change is a response to heavy use by “power users” and the rising cost of providing unlimited video generation. The company also warned that the free daily limit may shrink in the future to keep usage sustainable.

This update comes alongside broader changes to Sora’s video-tool features  including “cameos” (where you insert a person or avatar into a video), clip-stitching tools, and creator leaderboards. OpenAI is positioning Sora not just as a fun app, but as part of a creator-economy platform where users and rights-holders can monetise content.

The implications are significant. On one hand, content creators get more flexibility  unlimited work for those willing to pay. On the other, the shift from free to paid raises questions: how will this affect hobby users? Will smaller creators be priced out? And what happens when free limits drop further?

For regular users, it means a choice: stay within the free limits, pay for extra credits, or explore other tools. For OpenAI, it means testing the business model of high-volume AI video creation. In short, Sora’s next chapter is no longer just about what you can create  it’s about how much you’re willing to pay.
