Kolkata / Siliguri, October 2025
BJP MP Khagen Murmu, recovering from injuries in a Siliguri hospital, has alleged that he was targeted and assaulted by workers claiming allegiance to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). According to Murmu, the attackers declared themselves as “Didi’s men” (referring to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee) and threatened to end his life.
Speaking from his hospital bed where he is being treated for a fracture beneath his left eye Murmu recounted the harrowing attack during a flood-relief mission in North Bengal. He claimed the assailants confronted him and Siliguri MLA Sankar Ghosh while they awaited a boat crossing on a river, demanding that BJP leaders not be allowed in the area. The attackers reportedly smashed the car’s windshield and pelted stones, causing his injuries. He said the incident appeared to be coordinated and premeditated.
Murmu also alleged that police were present at the scene but did not intervene. He further expressed disappointment over Mamata Banerjee’s visit to him in hospital, stating that she made no references to the arrests of the accused.
The attack has triggered political uproar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the violence as unacceptable and cited it as evidence of deteriorating law and order in West Bengal. Meanwhile, the state government has responded by asserting that due process is being followed in investigating the matter.
Murmu’s allegations come against the backdrop of significant flooding and landslides in Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Darjeeling districts, which have claimed lives and displaced many residents. He was in the region as part of efforts to assist affected communities. Police have since detained multiple individuals in connection with the assault. The case now places fresh focus on political tensions and security concerns in flood-hit Bengal.
