Actress Deepika Padukone has finally opened up about her sudden exit from two major projects Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s “Spirit” and the sequel to “Kalki 2898 AD.” Her statement has taken social media by storm, as she called out the “double standards” women face in the film industry when it comes to basic work demands and fair treatment.
In a recent interview, Deepika revealed that she had requested an 8-hour work schedule while shooting something that is quite common for male actors in Bollywood. However, when she made the same request, it was seen as “difficult” and “unreasonable.” Deepika said she didn’t want to name anyone but pointed out how men in the industry have similar work conditions without being judged for it.
She said that her simple wish for a balanced work-life routine was misunderstood, and that this kind of bias shows how women are still treated differently in professional spaces. Deepika added that it’s important for everyone regardless of gender to speak up for fair working conditions and mutual respect.
Earlier this year, the production team of Kalki 2898 AD confirmed her departure, stating that both sides had “mutually agreed to part ways.” Reports suggested that scheduling issues and her insistence on a structured working day led to creative differences. A similar situation reportedly occurred with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film “Spirit,” which was set to star Prabhas in the lead role.
Despite the controversy, Deepika remains focused on her upcoming film “King”, where she reunites with Shah Rukh Khan. The duo, known for their chemistry in blockbusters like Om Shanti Om and Chennai Express, will be seen together for the sixth time. Deepika recently shared that working with Shah Rukh has always been a learning experience and that she values their long-standing friendship and trust.
Her statement has sparked a massive conversation online, with fans and industry insiders debating the unequal expectations placed on female actors in Bollywood. Many have praised Deepika for speaking up about issues that often remain behind closed doors.
Deepika’s words highlight a truth that many in the industry quietly acknowledge: when men set boundaries, they are respected; when women do, they are criticized. Her honest take has once again positioned her not only as one of India’s top actresses but also as a voice for equality and change in the entertainment world.
