A shocking incident has shaken Delhi University’s academic circles after a student leader allegedly assaulted a senior professor inside Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College. The incident, which took place on October 16, has triggered outrage among teachers and staff members, who have accused the university administration of failing to protect its faculty.
According to reports, the confrontation occurred when Professor Sujit Kumar was allegedly slapped by Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) Joint Secretary, Deepika Jha, during a heated argument in the principal’s office. What makes the episode more disturbing, teachers claim, is that the assault happened in front of college security and even police personnel. The event has sparked widespread anger among the academic community, who say this is not just an assault on a person, but an attack on the dignity of the teaching profession itself.
In response, teachers from more than 30 colleges under Delhi University have come together to protest the incident. They have demanded strict disciplinary action against the student leader and have called for an official inquiry to ensure justice. Many colleges observed a one-day strike earlier this week, refusing to take classes until the administration guarantees safety and accountability on campus. Placards reading “Stop Violence Against Teachers” and “Restore Campus Dignity” were seen outside Ambedkar College, reflecting a deep sense of frustration and betrayal among educators.
Amid mounting pressure, the university has set up a six-member inquiry committee to investigate the case and submit a report within two weeks. However, teachers’ associations have expressed dissatisfaction, saying that forming a committee is not enough. They are demanding that a formal FIR be registered against the student leader and that she be suspended from all university positions until the investigation concludes. They argue that the lack of immediate action is sending the wrong message that even physical assault inside college premises can go unpunished.
The administration, meanwhile, has assured that due process will be followed, but tensions remain high. Teachers allege that incidents of intimidation and verbal abuse have increased over the past few years, as campus politics has become more aggressive and polarised. They believe the current situation highlights the urgent need for stronger protection mechanisms and clearer boundaries between student politics and academic spaces.
Many professors who joined the protest said they now feel unsafe within the college. “If a teacher can be assaulted in front of police, then what safety do we have left?” one faculty member told Impact News Point. “This is not about one person it’s about the respect our profession deserves.”
The incident has also sparked debate among students. While some have condemned the assault and supported their teachers, others have called for calm and dialogue, fearing that the issue might deepen existing divisions on campus. Student organizations remain divided, but there is a growing call from all sides for transparency and justice.
This case has now become a litmus test for Delhi University’s ability to uphold discipline, equality, and safety on its campuses. Teachers have made it clear that they will continue their protest until strict action is taken. For many, this is not merely about punishment it’s about restoring faith in the institution and ensuring that classrooms remain places of respect, not conflict. As the inquiry progresses, the outcome will decide whether Delhi University can reaffirm its reputation as one of India’s most respected academic institutions, or whether this episode becomes a lasting symbol of the growing strain between student politics and the sanctity of education.
