In a fiery election rally in Bihar’s Begusarai district, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi once again took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of relying on theatrics and symbolism rather than real leadership. Gandhi’s sharp comments  including a sarcastic suggestion that the Prime Minister should “do yoga poses to please voters”  have ignited a new wave of political debate across the nation.

Addressing a large crowd, Rahul Gandhi mocked the Prime Minister’s long-standing image of strength, famously associated with his “56-inch chest” remark. He questioned whether physical might or posturing truly reflected leadership, reminding the audience that Mahatma Gandhi, despite his frail body, had the courage to challenge and defeat the British Empire. The Congress leader stressed that true strength lies not in chest size or slogans but in humility, empathy, and the courage to stand for truth.

Taking a direct swipe at the government’s foreign policy, Rahul alleged that key national decisions  including ceasefire announcements  were influenced by external powers. Without naming anyone specifically, he hinted that India’s sovereignty should not bend under foreign pressure, arguing that the current leadership had become “remote-controlled.”

He further criticized the government’s economic track record, attacking policies such as demonetisation and GST, which, according to him, have crippled small businesses while favouring the country’s wealthiest corporations. He accused the BJP government of creating a system that “works for billionaires, not for ordinary citizens.”

Rahul’s remarks took a lighter, but pointed turn when he quipped that the Prime Minister could “break into a yoga asana the moment someone tells him it’s politically beneficial.” The crowd responded with laughter and applause, interpreting it as a dig at what Gandhi described as Modi’s “habit of showmanship.”

While the audience in Bihar responded with enthusiasm, the comment has stirred a political uproar nationwide. BJP leaders have dismissed Rahul’s remarks as disrespectful, calling them “immature and attention-seeking.” However, within Congress circles, the statement is being hailed as a bold moment of truth-telling  a signal that the opposition is ready to challenge the Prime Minister’s image-driven politics.

Political analysts believe Rahul Gandhi’s choice of tone  mixing humour, sarcasm, and accusation  reflects a strategic shift ahead of the upcoming Bihar elections. Rather than focusing solely on policy differences, the Congress leader is aiming to paint Modi as a “performer” who has mastered the art of political theatrics but lost touch with the real struggles of ordinary Indians.

As the campaign heats up, this latest exchange is likely to deepen the verbal sparring between the BJP and Congress. The “Yoga-Asana” comment, though brief, has struck a nerve  reminding both supporters and critics that in Indian politics, words can sometimes be as powerful as any policy.
