In a chilling crime that has shaken the rural community of Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, a 34-year-old woman and her 8-year-old son were found strangled and disposed of in separate village wells. The accused: her own lover and his cousin. The case has sparked outrage over betrayal, social media luring, and horrific violence against the vulnerable.

Discovery of the Crime

Villagers first raised alarm when they noticed floating debris and a foul odor emanating from one of the wells nearly 30 km from the victims’ home. Rescue divers recovered a bound and tied body of the child. Moments later, another body—identified as his mother—was found similarly concealed in a neighboring well.

Investigation Points to a Failed Promise of Love

Police investigations uncovered a tragic narrative: the woman, Sunita Chaturvedi (alias Pallavi), had formed a romantic connection with Chhatrapal Singour (26) via Instagram. Believing him to be single and committed to marriage, she involved him in her life, sharing hopes for support for herself and her son.

However, Sunita’s suspicions and demands for clarity intensified when Chhatrapal secretly married another woman. In a cold act of betrayal, he lured both Sunita and her son to a remote village under false pretenses on June 18, where he and his cousin, Shubham Kumar Singour (22), strangled them. In an equally horrifying twist, both bodies were wrapped in cloth, weighted with stones, and discarded in two separate wells.

Justice Moves Swiftly

Following the discovery, police swiftly arrested both Chhatrapal and Shubham based on a tip-off. As investigations continue at the Amleshwar police station, authorities have recorded the statements and collected physical evidence from the scene.

Community Shock and Growing Demand for Safety

The crime has deeply unsettled the local community. Once a symbol of love and companionship, the tragic betrayal has become a grim warning. Locals are demanding accountability—not just legal, but also for social media’s role in fostering perilous relationships that can turn deadly.

Law enforcement officials noted that despite the modern channels of communication, real emotional entanglements in rural contexts can cascade into violence if left unchecked.

Why This Case Reverberates Nationally

  • Digital Relationships, Real Risks: Sunita’s trust, built on WhatsApp/Instagram interactions, underscores the vulnerability that can come from online liaisons.
  • Gender and Societal Pressures: As a single mother seeking security, Sunita’s plight reflects broader systemic failures in protecting vulnerable individuals.
  • Cold-Blooded Betrayal: The cruel disposal of mother and child not only shocks the conscience, but challenges basic notions of justice and humanity.

Parting Thoughts

This brutal crime is more than a local tragedy—it’s a symbol of how unchecked digital intimacy, betrayal, and poor social support can escalate into unspeakable violence. As the joint lives of a mother and son were ended by someone they believed would protect them, the need for legal vigilance, media literacy, and emotional protection stands starkly clear.
