A tragic incident at a government college in Dharamshala has shaken Himachal Pradesh and reignited national debate over campus safety, ragging, and accountability within educational institutions. A 19-year-old college student lost her life after allegedly facing prolonged harassment by senior students and inappropriate behaviour by a faculty member, leading to criminal cases and multiple official inquiries.

According to the complaint filed by the student’s father, the young woman, a second-year undergraduate, was subjected to ragging and physical assault by three senior students earlier this year. The complaint further alleges that a professor at the same institution repeatedly behaved inappropriately with her, causing severe emotional distress. The cumulative trauma, the family claims, deeply affected her mental and physical health over the following months.

The student reportedly fell ill and was undergoing medical treatment outside the state when her condition worsened. She passed away in late December, leaving her family devastated and triggering widespread outrage once details of the alleged harassment emerged. Following the death, the family approached the police, demanding strict action against those they believe were responsible for pushing their daughter into extreme distress.

Police have since registered a case against three senior students under provisions related to ragging and voluntarily causing harm. A separate case has been filed against the accused professor under laws dealing with sexual harassment. Investigators are now examining medical records, statements from classmates and staff, and digital evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the student’s death.

The case took a more disturbing turn after a video, allegedly recorded by the student before her death, surfaced online. In the clip, she is heard describing “ajeeb harkatein” strange and uncomfortable behaviour by the professor, and speaking about the fear and anxiety she experienced on campus. Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the video’s authenticity, but it has intensified public anger and demands for justice.

In response to the growing outrage, the state education department has suspended the accused professor pending a departmental inquiry. A high-level committee has been constituted to investigate lapses in institutional oversight and the functioning of the college’s internal grievance and anti-ragging mechanisms.

National bodies have also taken note of the incident. Education regulators have sought detailed reports from the college and state authorities, while women’s rights institutions have demanded swift and transparent action. The tragedy has once again exposed serious concerns about how complaints by students are handled and whether existing safeguards are sufficient to protect young people in higher education. As the investigation continues, the student’s death has become a grim reminder of the consequences of unchecked ragging and abuse of power on campuses. Parents, educators, and activists are calling for stronger enforcement of anti-ragging laws, greater accountability for faculty, and a campus culture where students feel safe to speak up without fear.
