Ranchi’s Lower Bazaar police arrested a man identified as Taufiq Qureshi, also known as Pappu Qureshi, on Wednesday on charges of animal smuggling and sent him to jail the same day. Qureshi, a resident of Azad Basti in Ranchi, is the latest arrest in a series of actions that police across the city have taken against illegal animal trafficking networks operating in and around the state capital. The arrest comes against a backdrop of rising animal smuggling activity across several areas of Ranchi. In a separate operation that preceded Wednesday’s arrest, police from BIT Thana intercepted and seized a container loaded with animals. The driver of the vehicle abandoned the truck on the spot and fled, and efforts to trace him are ongoing. The seized container and its animal cargo have been taken into custody.

In a third incident, police from Sikidriya Thana seized four pickup vehicles that were found to be carrying animals illegally. These seizures, taken together, point to what authorities appear to be treating as an organised network rather than isolated incidents with different vehicles, different routes, and different individuals involved in moving animals out of or through the Ranchi region.

Animal smuggling is a cognizable offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, depending on the species being transported. The transport of cattle for slaughter across state lines is also governed by state-level cattle protection laws, which in Jharkhand carry provisions for arrest and vehicle seizure.

The fact that three separate police stations Lower Bazaar, BIT Thana, and Sikidriya have all recorded animal smuggling-related action within a short period suggests that Ranchi’s law enforcement machinery is running coordinated or parallel operations to disrupt what appears to be an active supply chain for illegal animal transport in the district.

Qureshi’s arrest and immediate remand to judicial custody indicates that police had sufficient evidence at the time of arrest to present before a magistrate and seek detention. The case is now before the court.
